Although it’s not the most popular truck in Australia and similar markets, this models is hugely important for Mazda. Therefore, the Japanese carmaker is turning a new page in the history of this model. The original model of the BT-50 came in 2006, while the current, second-generation has been around since 2011. Therefore, the 2021 Mazda BT-50 redesign seems natural.
Still, it will bring more significant changes that you’ve probably expected from an overhaul like this. Mazda has never been famous for body-on-frame vehicles. Therefore, the mid-size pickup has been co-developed with Ford. Moreover, most of the first two generations is actually a Ford Ranger. However, things will be a little bit different in the future. Mazda has found a new lover. This time, it will be a joint venture with another renowned truck maker, Isuzu.
Once again, the BT- 50 will be based on another truck, this time on the next-generation D-Max. Of course, most of the mechanics will be Isuzu’s parts, while Mazda will take care of aesthetics. Latest reports are suggesting that the new truck could hit the market already in the next year, as the new Mazda BT-50 2021 model.
2021 Mazda BT-50 Redesign
Considering all the aforementioned, the 2021 Mazda BT-50 redesign will bring some pretty radical changes. As you may presume, Isuzu will take care of the platform and most mechanics. Therefore, we are about to see Isuzu’s new platform, which will bring a lot of new design solutions. One of the possible novelties is a new suspension setup. It looks like the new model will feature a coilover suspension, instead of three-leaf design that characterizes the current generation.
Of course, the BT-50 will come with the same feature. When it comes to styling, we expect much more influence from Mazda. After all, this carmaker has one of the best-looking design languages in the automotive industry today, so we may expect its application on the new truck as well. We presume that each truck would come with its own face, while the overall shape would look largely the same. After all, latest reports are suggesting that the all-new Mazda BT-50 2021 will be produced in Isuzu’s assemblies, along with the new D-Max.
Engine and Performances
Of course, the most important aspect of the new model will be its capabilities. Considering that the new model will be based on the new D-Max, we may presume that the 2021 Mazda BT-50 will feature the same engines. The current D-Max comes with a variety of engines in the offer. We presume that Mazda would pick just one or two of them.
Naturally, those would be diesel units and the first one that comes to mind is a bigger 3.0-liter turbodiesel, which is good for about 177 horsepower. Of course, we count on a notable power boost in this case, which should have a highly positive impact on towing capacity and overall performances. The current generation of both BT-50 and D-Max can tow up to 3.500 kg (7.700 pounds), so we could expect slight improvements in these aspects, although it is still early to talk about numbers.
Another engine we could see under the hood of BT-50 is a smaller 2.5-liter turbodiesel. Isuzu uses this engine for the European market and it delivers around 165 horsepower. So, if Mazda decides to offer a new truck in the Old Continent as well, we could see it with this engine. Of course, we count on a slight power boost in this case as well.
Some reports are also suggesting that Mazda could offer some of its own engines, particularly a gasoline options. We haven’t heard anything from the officials on this matter up to this date.
Interior
The new model will also bring a new cabin design, and it looks like Mazda is going to take care of it, instead of using the same design as the D-Max. After all, even the current generation features a different dashboard than the Ranger, so this seems logical. Still, there’s a possibility to see Izusu with Mazda’s cabin design, which would definitely be interesting to see, considering that the D-Max has never been famous for stylish interiors.
On the other side, Mazda could apply some of its latest design solutions and offer a stylish, premium-like cabin, which would definitely be a strong point when competing with rivals like Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger etc. Naturally, we count on the latest tech features as well. When it comes to cab design, we expect that the new Mazda BT-50 2021 will come in a double cab layout only.
2021 Mazda BT-50 Release Date and Price
If we can rely on the latest reports, the new 2021 Mazda BT-50 will be ready by the second half of the next year. Therefore, we expect it will hit the market sometime in the third quarter of 2020. When it comes to the price, we presume that the new model feature starting price between 35.000 and 40.000 Australian Dollars, depending on the level of standard equipment. More details should be known soon.
Mazda BT-50 Boss Edition
The new model will come in about a year, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see any interesting novelty before. The Japanese manufacturer has just announced that a new, Boss version is coming for the 2020 model year. this will be a range-topping model, with various upgrades over standard models.
The first thing you’ll notice is the presence of various distinctive styling details. The truck comes in a double cab layout and exclusively in a white finish. However, there are tons of black parts, including bumpers, wheels, roll bars, grille, side mirrors and more.
When it comes to powertrain, you can count on Ford’s well-known 3.2-liter five-cylinder turbodiesel and standard all-wheel drive. On the inside, you can find exclusive features like Alpine sound system with carbon fiber speakers, as well as the infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The starting price of Mazda BT-50 Boss Edition goes around 56.000 AUD.
