2025 Toyota Tacoma News: I Force Max Engine, Trailhunter Trim, and More

The next-gen truck is debuting as the 2024 YM. Toyota didn’t unveil all the details and changes on the upcoming model. But, they will save some things for the 2025 Toyota Tacoma. Expectations are huge from the best-selling model in the midsize class. There are plenty of options, starting under the hood, cabin and cab configurations, trim levels, and other options.

After launching the next-gen Tacoma, Toyota will turn to other projects. The all-new compact pickup is on the way. Stout is also about to debut next year. Before updating smaller models, the Japanese company launched the Tundra with I Force systems. Tacoma is going to use the same technology but on a turbocharged four-cylinder unit.

Eventually, the truck will become an EV. The first concept is already here and the first prototype could be built on the 2025 Toyota Tacoma. Before that happens, a hybrid I FORCE MAX is going to be available. Surprisingly, in combination with the TRD Pro model. If you still don’t know, this is not the most-packed off-road version in the lineup after arrival of the Trailhunter edition.

2025 Toyota Tacoma Specs

Under the hood of the 2025 Toyota Tacoma is still a four-pot engine as the base configuration. For the next-gen truck, engineers revisited the system. Now it creates 228 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. EPA is yet to announce official fuel economy numbers. The truck offers an AWD even in the base configuration. Towing capacity is not great.

The new powertrain is called the I Force. It replaces a V6 with a turbocharged four-banger. The output of the system is 278 hp and 317 lb-ft, or 270 hp and 310 lb-ft if you use a manual transmission. It is a six-pace gearbox. The stick is still available, although the standard setup includes an automatic case. Again, RWD and AWD are there.

High-end trim levels also use the I Force Max powerplant. That is the same turbo-four engine in combination with a hybrid system. Such a Tacoma truck can deliver 325 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. This is a huge boost compared to all other setups we saw previously. Towing capacity should be above 7,000 pounds, but hauling big cargo increases gas mileage. It is better when the truck is not loaded. But when towing, it is a totally different story.

2025 Toyota Tacoma EV

The Japanese company already announced plans of building an electric truck. The Tacoma EV is the first concept from Toyota, although the competition is more focused on the full-size segment. The prototype is still just a shell without significant moves in the development. Anyway, those types of trucks and vehicles will overtake the market from engines with internal combustion at some point. Toyota can promise towing capacity and range, but the final product is still not close. To be competitive, the electric Tacoma should offer at least 200 miles on a single charge and up to 10k pounds of towing.

TRD Pro and Trailhunter Off-Road Packages

There is a new sheriff for tough terrains. The 2025 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter offers a unique set of features, but it is more focused on overlanding and camping. The TRD Pro is still there for fun in mud, sand, and other terrain types where most other trucks get stuck. For example, the Trailhunter brings Emu suspension setup and larger front brakes. You can also choose between turbo and hybrid engines. There are also notable interior details, such as sport buckets and a huge multimedia screen.

On the other hand, the TRD Pro was considered as the best off-road truck for years. Only Colorado ZR2 could compete with Tacoma. The upcoming vehicle offers the same package, although we expected updates and upgrades. But, it will happen on the 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. The competition is tougher and the company can’t go easy on them.

Approximate Pricing

The base version of the truck will still be under $30,000. Only a few years ago, there were new trucks available for $21,000-$22,000. Not now. The SR is the entry model and the SR5 is already above $30,000.

There will be a lineup of the TRD models. The TRD PreRunner won’t impress you too much, but it can still be cool for not-so-tough off-road conditions. Each next trim level improves the configuration and prepares truck for more complicated challenges. You can find TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road before picking the most impressive TRD Pro version with the best features for wild adventures. After the upgrade, it will cost more than $50,000. With a hybrid engine, it is already there.

The Limited package comes with premium options, such as leather seats, blind-spot monitor, large infotainment screen, and many others. Its price is around $42,000. The 2025 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter is the most expensive configuration with the $52,000 price tag in the base form. Of course, a couple of upgrades will make it even more expensive.
