The truck market is pretty dynamic these days. Things are changing pretty fast and while electric pickups seem like a distant future just a couple of years ago, now they look closer than ever. Moreover, some of them will debut already in the next year. Those are models from new names in the industry, such as Rivian and Bollinger. The Tesla pickup truck is also coming soon. All this means that traditional truck makers will have to adapt to new conditions on the market. Naturally, the 2020 Ford F-150 All-Electric is the first one that comes to mind.
The F-150 is the most popular truck on the market and also the company’s biggest moneymaker. So, they put special attention to this model, which should use the well-known nameplate, instead of being a completely new name on the market.
The same things go with the hybrid powertrain. Ram already offers mild hybrid systems in its models, while the genuine hybrid version from Toyota is about to come already in the next year, along with the redesigned Tundra. All this clearly indicates that the 2020 Ford F-150 Hybrid will come soon as well. As you probably know, the redesign should happen in the next year and that would be a perfect opportunity to show first electrified versions of the truck.
Ford F-150 Hybrid
When it comes to the 2020 Ford F-150 Hybrid, things are pretty clear here. The new model will wait for the redesign, in order to adopt the new styling and various tech solutions. Therefore, we don’t believe that the new version will look much different than standard gasoline and diesel models. A couple of distinctive details will come, but most of the things will be the same.
When it comes to the powertrain, it looks like Ford already has something that can be used in the 2020 Ford F-150 Hybrid. Of course, the new Explorer comes to mind first. The new crossover comes with a hybrid system that is based on a 3.3-liter V6 engine and a combined output goes around 318 horsepower. We would probably see some power boost for this occasion.
Still, keep in mind that the next-generation Tundra is about to come with a quite powerful, 450-hp hybrid system, so we may expect some answer from the blue oval company. A plug-in hybrid comes to mind and once again we are looking at the Explorer. A plug-in hybrid version has been designed for the European market. The system is based on a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and the max output is expected to go around 450 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque.
2020 Ford F-150 All-Electric
The 2020 Ford F-150 Hybrid will come first, but the all-electric version should come soon after. Still, there is a lot of speculation about this model. Some reports suggest that the company will build a completely new model which will only use a well-known nameplate. This makes perfect sense if we consider that Ford is a big shareholder in the company called Rivian, which is about to introduce an all-electric pickup truck already in the next year.
This truck will come in several variants when it comes to battery and output. We presume that the 2020 Ford F-150 All-Electric will borrow a lot of things from it, including chassis, drivetrain and much more. Of course, electric motors and batteries are the first things that come to mind, but keep in mind that Ford is also developing a new Mustang-inspired electric crossover, which will feature a 300-mile range.
On the other side, the styling should be a close match to the rest of the F-150 lineup. We count on the same shape, though the front face should clearly allude to the model’s all-electric character. The cabin should look very similar, particularly in terms of the dashboard layout, which is about to come significantly improved with the upcoming redesign. Many reports suggest tons of hi-tech goodies, including a new, 12.0-inch touchscreen interface.
2020 Ford F-150 All-Electric and Hybrid Launch Dates
It is still early to talk about some more precise dates. Still, we have no doubt that the hybrid model will come first. Most reports suggest it will hit the market already in the next year, along with the rest of the redesigned models. On the other side, the 2020 Ford F-150 All-Electric is still a couple of years away from us. Some sources claim it will arrive in 2022. More details should be known soon.
