2025 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison Review: No V8 – No Problem

The demand for the Colorado ZR2 Bison is pretty high. That will make the company produce even more of these packages. Fans thought the Desert Boss is going to replace the 2025 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, but it is just a limited-edition model. AEV is working on the upgrades, although not too many things can be better. But, the all-new truck got a new engine. So, a proper attunement is required.

There were rumors about the new powertrains for the Colorado, but a turbo-four was not at the top of wishlists. Well, a V8 is a far-fetched story, but some enthusiasts still believed in it. Not only General Motors, but also other companies are downsizing their drivetrains, replacing big units with more efficient ones, adding hybrids… So, the 2025 Colorado Bison V8 would be a move in the opposite direction.

V8 Options For Colorado

GM still keeps big powertrains for some of its big rigs. For example, a high-end Silverado truck is yet to get a mighty supercharged 8-cylinder engine. A smaller pickup will go with a smaller unit. Again, General Motors is ready with 6.2 or 5.3-liter displacements. The first one delivers 420 hp that 2025 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison can handle. However, the displacement is too huge for a midsize pickup.

A 5.3-liter mill could fit under the hood of the Colorado Bison. Power outputs are not crazy, but truckers appreciate 355 hp from a V8 more than similar numbers from a turbo-four mill. It also creates 385 lb-ft of torque. All in all, this was the fans’ favorite. A 4.3-liter V8 is even more fittable, but this powerplant is no longer available.

New Powertrain

The all-new truck replaced all the old engines. No more weak four-cylinder unit, no more V6. Since we didn’t get a V8, the new turbo-four is a good alternative. For the 2025 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, the most potent configuration can produce 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. There are also two other configuration with 237 hp/259 lb-ft and 310 hp/390 lb-ft. The towing capacity is just 6,000 pounds for the ZR2 Bison. Properly equipped, the pickup can haul up to 7,700 pounds. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to all wheels if you pick this model.
