The upcoming 2024 Mercedes-Benz X-Class is going on sale, reportedly. The comeback of the Mercedes’ only pickup truck is happening, so can’t wait to hear more details. Previous generation was a failure, and even Mercedes admitted that.

However, trucks are now popular like never before. Moreover, the all-electric vehicles are taking over the market. Therefore, building electric truck makes perfect sense. New model will depart from the Nissan Navara, so we expect to see something completely new from Mercedes and its X-Class model.

Mercedes-Benz X-Class Electric

We are currently in an era of electrification within the automotive industry, with carmakers rushing to electrify their lineups as quickly as possible. Mercedes-Benz is among the leaders in this aspect, making an all-electric pickup truck seem quite likely. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz X-Class would benefit from the company’s advanced technologies, and in this case, it probably wouldn’t share much with the Navara.

Instead, it would become a part of the EQ family, and we expect it would be named the EQX. This model would come with an all-electric powertrain, and many parts would be shared with models like the EQE and EQS, not just in terms of electric motors and batteries, but also in terms of aesthetics. The front end would likely come with the same grille and lighting groups as these other models. Of course, the crew cab layout would be the only one on offer, and we wouldn’t exclude the possibility of seeing full-size dimensions, which would put this model in competition with trucks like the F-150 Lightning and Tesla Cybertruck.

Platform

If Mercedes-Benz decides to use the Navara as the basis for the 2024 X-Class, it will have to differentiate it more significantly from the Nissan model. One option is to provide it with unique styling that aligns with the brand’s current design language. The interior would need to be more upscale, too, with the latest tech features.

In terms of powertrain options, Mercedes could use its own engines and transmissions instead of relying on Nissan’s offerings. The X-Class could get a range of diesel and gasoline engines, as well as a hybrid powertrain. The company may also consider introducing a plug-in hybrid version, which would further differentiate the X-Class from its competitors.

Lastly, the X-Class could get an improved suspension system that provides a more comfortable ride and better handling. Mercedes-Benz has always been known for its focus on luxury and performance, and the new X-Class would need to reflect those values to be successful.

Engines

It’s possible that Mercedes-Benz may focus on offering a more luxurious package with a finer interior and more tech features to make the new X-Class successful. There could also be mechanical upgrades, especially in terms of the powertrain.

While the previous model was only offered with diesel engines, this time around, we could see a gasoline version, potentially with the company’s new 3.0-liter turbo inline-four engine. Some sort of electrification, possibly even a plug-in hybrid setup, would also be expected.

2024 Mercedes-Benz X-Class Launch Date

Right now, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz X-Class is not official yet. However, many reports are saying that the comeback of the X-Class truck is happening, most likely by the end of 2023. The price is not available yet, but we will publish more info once Mercedes provide official specs.

A lot of reports about the future of this truck are coming these days. Many of them suggest discontinuation in the near future. characteristics and features, which seems logical, considering the model’s age. However, we are pretty sure that this won’t happen before the next year, so the 2020 Mercedes X-Class will carry on in the same way. We count on the same design characteristics and features, which seems logical, considering the model’s age.

This truck has been introduced just a couple of years ago, so we don’t expect anything particular to change. Of course, a couple of novelties in terms of standard equipment are possible, but the core will remain the same even in this aspect. This refers to the engine lineup as well, which consists of both diesel and gasoline options. The new model should hit the market sometime late in the year, probably in December.

2020 Mercedes X-Class Design

In terms of base design characteristics, everything seems pretty familiar with this model. As you probably know, this truck is heavily based on the Nissan Navara. It rides on the same platform and features largely the same shape. The front face may feature Mercedes’ latest design language, but the overall shape is practically the same. That’s a good thing for sure, considering that the German manufacturer actually doesn’t have too much experience with BoF vehicles.

On the other side, Navara is one of the best models in the class when it comes to a balance between comfort and capabilities. Therefore, you can count on the same specs as in Navara, including the same 124-inch wheelbase, 210.2 inches of overall length, same approach and departure angles, etc.

Interior Design

Navara has always been known as a pretty capable truck but interior design has never featured too much refinement. Therefore, designers from the German manufacturer put a lot of effort in their first truck. Naturally, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz X-Class interior will carry on in the same way. Compared to Nissan, the difference is obvious.

Although the base dashboard contour can be noticed, almost every part has been revised. The first thing you’ll notice is that the quality of materials is significantly better. Also, there are some recognizable design elements that characterize other models from Mercedes-Benz as well. Of course, there is a familiar steering wheel, as well as all those round air vents.

The truck is also full of tech goodies. You can count on a large 8.4-inch touchscreen, which comes with the company’s infotainment system, as well as on a 5.4 display on the cluster. Although Mercedes offers six different interior colors in order to make the truck more luxurious, some of the parts come directly from Nissan. This particularly refers to the center console, which comes with familiar HVAC controls, 4WD dial, gear shifter etc.

2020 Mercedes X-Class Engines

Considering that this truck is available in many parts of the world except North America, it’s no wonder that the focus is on diesel engines. Therefore, there are three options that go on such fuel. Base models feature a familiar 2.3-liter turbodiesel, which is good for about 163 horsepower and 297 pound-feet of torque. The same engine comes in a more powerful version too, with a max output of 190 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Those who are for some sportier performances can opt for a bigger 3.0-liter V6 engine, which delivers 258 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque.

Those who prefer gasoline engines can pick a version with a 2.0-liter engine, which is good for about 165 horsepower. When it comes to transmission, a large V6 comes with a 7-speed automatic only. Other engines are available with both 7-speed automatic and 6-speed manual gearboxes.

2020 Mercedes X-Class Discontinuation

2020 Mercedes X-Class Release Date and Price

Considering that there are no bigger changes to come for the next year, we expect to see 2020 Mercedes X-Class sometime late in the year. We don’t expect to see changes in price. So, the base model should go around 39.000/40.000 dollars, depending on the market.

Discontinuation

If we can rely on the latest reports, this truck could be discontinued soon, just a couple of years after discontinuation. There is a couple of reasons for such a scenario. Without any doubt, poor sales are the most important one, as less than 17.000 units have been sold in the last year. Simply, this model is way too expensive for an average truck buyer, who would rather go for higher trim levels of mainstream models like VW Amarok or Ford Ranger. Also, the truck has never had a chance to try its luck in North America, where trucks are most popular.

Of course, the reason lays in the fact that the X-Class is built in Spain. This means there is no chance to avoid the so-called Chicken Tax, which would make this truck even more expensive. Some reports suggest the X-Class might remain available in South Africa and South America, but that probably won’t happen either.
